NEET 2027 Exam Pattern: 180 Questions, 720 Marks, No Choice

45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology, 720 marks, one minute a question on average. The exact split, in marks, and why it should reorganize your study calendar more than any advice does.

The Numbers That Actually Matter

NEET UG is conducted by the NTA as a single national test for admission to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses. Since the 2025 cycle the paper has run as a straight, no-choice format: 180 questions, no elective questions to skip past, over a 3-hour (180-minute) window, for 720 total marks. That was a change from the pandemic-era pattern that ran from 2021 through 2024, where each subject was split into a compulsory Section A and an optional Section B - 200 questions on the paper, of which you attempted 180, in a longer 200-minute window. NTA discontinued the optional Section B for the 2025 cycle. If you're reading prep material that references "200 questions" or "attempt 180 of 200," it is describing that earlier pattern, and note that includes material written for NEET 2024 itself, which still ran it. Confirm the exact structure against the official NTA information bulletin for your own cycle before building a plan around any number in this post - NTA has changed this pattern before and can again.

On the current no-choice format, 180 questions in 180 minutes is a clean 1 minute per question if you spent it perfectly evenly - which you shouldn't, for reasons the rest of this post gets into.

The Subject Split, In Exact Marks

The 180 questions divide 45 Physics / 45 Chemistry / 90 Biology (45 Botany + 45 Zoology). At +4 per correct answer, that's a ceiling of 180 marks each from Physics and Chemistry, and 360 - fully half the paper - from Biology alone. No other subject comes close, and it's the single number that should reorganize your study calendar more than any piece of general advice: a candidate who is merely solid in Biology and weak in Physics will typically outscore a candidate who is excellent in Physics and average in Biology, purely because there are twice as many Biology marks on the table.

Marking Scheme: Why +4/-1 Changes Your Calculus

Every one of the 180 questions on the current format is compulsory - there's no elective buffer to hide a bad guess behind. A correct answer is +4, an incorrect one is -1, and a blank scores 0. Syllabus, Anchored Entirely to NCERT

The entire syllabus is drawn from NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12 - not JEE-style extended treatment, not reference-book tangents. Broadly, by subject:

  • Biology (Botany + Zoology, 90 questions) - diversity in living organisms, cell biology, genetics and evolution, human physiology, plant physiology, ecology and environment, biotechnology. Coaching analyses consistently flag Human Physiology, Genetics and Evolution, and Ecology as the highest-frequency chapters within Biology - worth weighting slightly ahead of the rest when time is short, though every chapter here still carries real marks.
  • Chemistry (45 questions) - Physical, Organic and Inorganic, drawn from the Class 11/12 NCERT chemistry syllabus. Inorganic is largely fact-recall (also NCERT-anchored), organic is reaction-and-mechanism based, physical chemistry involves calculation but at a gentler level than JEE.   • Physics (45 questions) - mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics. What This Means for Your Prep Calendar

Once the 45/45/90 split and the +4/-1 asymmetry are internalized, your study calendar should stop treating all three subjects as equal thirds. A realistic weekly split gives Biology the largest block of hours (it's half the marks on the paper), Chemistry the middle share - it's also the subject most likely to swing your score up quickly, since inorganic recall responds fast to focused revision - and Physics a smaller but non-negotiable block aimed at consistency across chapters rather than mastery of every possible problem type.
