NEET Revision Schedule: What the Spacing Evidence Supports

Biology is 360 of NEET's 720 marks, and it is also the half of the paper the spaced-repetition literature actually studied. Here is what the evidence says about the gap between revision passes, where it locates an optimum, and the three places it stops being usable for a NEET aspirant.

Put weeks between revision passes, not days - and scale the gap to how far away the exam is. The single most directly applicable data point comes from Cepeda, Pashler, Vul, Wixted and Rohrer's 2006 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin, which pooled 317 experiments and 14,811 participants. Buried in its Table 7 is an experiment run at a 168-day retention interval - almost exactly a NEET aspirant's gap from a winter revision pass to a May paper. Recall peaked at a 28-day gap between study sessions: 56% correct, against 33% at a one-day gap and 43% at an 84-day gap.

That matters disproportionately for NEET because of what the paper is made of. Biology is 90 of 180 questions and 360 of 720 marks, and it is recall-dense in exactly the way the spacing literature's materials are. The evidence covers half of NEET well and the other half badly, and knowing which half is which is more useful than any schedule template.

Why NEET's shape changes the spacing question

On the current no-choice format the paper is 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes for 720 marks, at +4 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong one. The subject split is fixed and lopsided.

Two structural facts follow, and both push in the same direction.

First, half the paper is the kind of material the research is about. Cepeda et al.'s title is precise: "Distributed practice in verbal recall tasks". Paired associates and list recall. NCERT Biology - phyla, enzyme names, hormone functions, cycle steps, labelled diagrams - is closer to that material than almost anything else in Indian competitive exams. The transfer is still an assumption, but it is a shorter leap than usual.

Second, NEET UG runs as a single annual sitting. There is no second session in the same cycle to fall back on, the way JEE Main runs January and April with the better percentile counting (see the Main-versus-Advanced comparison for that contrast). A revision schedule for a two-session exam can afford to peak twice. A NEET schedule has to peak on one date, which makes the timing of the last passes a real decision rather than a detail.

What the meta-analysis establishes, and what it does not

Across all retention intervals, spaced study produced 47.3% correct on the final test against 36.7% for massed study, over 254 studies and 14,811 participants, t(540) = 6.6, p < .001. That is the well-evidenced part, and it is not in doubt.

What the paper cannot tell you is the number you want. Its own summary is unusually blunt:

"After more than a century of research on spacing, much of it motivated by the obvious practical implications of the phenomenon, it is unfortunate that we cannot say with certainty how long the ISI should be to optimize long-term retention."

What it does establish, and states as its central practical finding, is that the optimal gap grows as the period you need to remember over grows. For practical purposes the retention interval "will likely be well in excess of one day." The long-horizon data, which is the part a NEET aspirant needs

Table 7 of the meta-analysis collects the studies that used both long gaps and long retention intervals - the only ones whose timescale resembles a NEET preparation year. These are the numbers.

Three readings, in descending order of how much weight they will bear.

1. Short horizon, short gap. Long horizon, long gap. At a 10-day retention interval the one-day gap won (74%) and every longer gap did slightly worse. At 168 days the one-day gap was the worst option tested (33%). The direction reverses completely, which is the meta-analysis's central claim showing up in a single pair of experiments. Practically: the gap that is right for revising before a weekly coaching test is wrong for revising against May.

2. There is an interior optimum, and over-spacing has a real cost. The 168-day row rises 33 → 47 → 56 and then falls back to 43 and 45. Longer is not monotonically better. A chapter left untouched for three months lost roughly as much as one revised the very next day.

3. The peak sat at roughly a sixth of the horizon. 28 days out of 168 is 16.7%. Bahrick et al.'s 360-day rows point the same way at 56 days (15.6%) - but with a caveat that must be stated: 56 days was the longest gap they tested, so that is a ceiling of the tested range, not a located peak. Only the 168-day experiment brackets an optimum on both sides. The meta-analysis does not itself state a percentage rule, and I am reading one out of two studies rather than reporting a finding.

Turning that into a NEET calendar

The arithmetic below is derived from the two data points above, not measured. It is offered as a defensible default rather than an optimum, and the two rows drawn from actual observations are marked.

Note what falls out of a constant-ratio rule: every row gives you roughly five or six passes before the exam, whenever you start. That is arithmetic, not a discovery - but it is a useful sanity check. A plan that schedules a chapter for two revisions in a year is under-spaced against this evidence, and one that schedules fifteen is spending time the syllabus does not have.

The compounding consequence for NEET is a scheduling problem rather than a memory one. A candidate who finishes Human Physiology in June and does not touch it again until the January full-syllabus phase has taken a seven-month gap on a five-month horizon - the over-spacing failure the 84-day and 168-day rows describe. Which is why the schedule has to be recorded per chapter rather than held in mind: the chapters that quietly go a full term untouched are, by construction, the ones nobody remembers to worry about.

Which half of NEET this evidence actually covers

This is the part most spaced-repetition advice skips, and for NEET it is the difference between a defensible plan and a misapplied one.

Roughly 400 to 450 of the 720 marks sit in the top two rows. That is the strongest case anywhere in Indian competitive exams for taking spacing seriously - and simultaneously the reason a spacing schedule is not a whole revision strategy. Physics is a quarter of the paper and the literature above has almost nothing to say about it; that quarter needs problem-solving practice, and the argument for how to structure it is a different one entirely (see the NEET Physics strategy post). Applying a flashcard cadence to Physics because it worked for Biology is the predictable way to misuse this evidence.

Expanding intervals: the schedule shape nobody has evidence for

Almost every spaced-repetition tool, including Karma Yogi's own revision rounds, expands the gap after each pass - three days, then a week, then a fortnight, and so on. Cepeda et al. do not support that over a fixed gap. Their Table 8 compares expanding against fixed intervals across 18 studies and 1,518 participants: 62.0% for expanding against 58.6% for fixed, t(42) = 0.5, p = .61. Not significant. Their assessment of the wider claim is sharper still:

"Expanding study intervals rarely seem to produce much harm for recall after long delays, but there is insufficient data to say whether they help. This has not stopped some software developers from assuming that expanding study intervals work better than fixed intervals."

So if a coaching planner or an app hands you a specific expanding sequence and calls it science, the science does not extend that far. Expanding is defensible on workload grounds - it spends less time on chapters you have already secured, which matters when the syllabus is two years of NCERT across three subjects - but that is an argument about your calendar, not about your memory.

Where this evidence stops

  • The materials are word lists, not NCERT. "Verbal recall tasks" means paired associates and list recall. Biology terminology is the closest analogue in the exam, and it is still an analogue. Nothing here tested a labelled diagram, a pedigree problem or an assertion-reason question.
  • 85% of the data are young adults in a laboratory. Cepeda et al. state this explicitly. NEET is sat by well over twenty lakh candidates in a single three-hour proctored window with negative marking, at seventeen or eighteen. The mechanism plausibly transfers; the percentages do not transfer as numbers.
  • The long-horizon rows are thin. In the meta-analysis's own accounting, retention intervals of 30 days or more with gaps of 2-28 days rest on 4 studies and 175 participants, and gaps of 29-168 days on 3 studies and 84 participants. The most NEET-relevant evidence in this entire literature is also its thinnest.
  • I read the 168-day experiment inside the meta-analysis, not at source. Table 7 attributes those rows to a Cepeda et al. manuscript that was unpublished when the 2006 review went to press. I have not opened the primary study and cannot vouch for its methods beyond what the review reports.
  • The one-sixth ratio is my reading, not their finding. The paper states that optimal gaps grow with retention interval. It does not state a proportion. Two studies pointing at 15-17% is a pattern worth using as a default and not a law.
  • Expanding versus fixed is unresolved, as above, and the tools you and I both use pick a side anyway.
  • I have not sat NEET. Everything above is structural reasoning from the published pattern and from research I read in full. There is no first-hand account of a NEET attempt in this post, and there will not be one under this byline.
  • Nobody has run the study you want. There is no randomised trial of revision spacing in NEET, or in any Indian competitive exam, that I have been able to find.

Whatever gap you settle on, the thing that decides whether a schedule survives contact with a two-year syllabus is whether each chapter's last revision date is written down somewhere. Karma Yogi logs sessions against a subject and a topic and stamps a revision round on each pass, so the chapters drifting past their gap are visible rather than remembered. The optimal gap remains, on this evidence, an open question.

How often should I revise a chapter for NEET?
Scale the gap to how far away the exam is rather than fixing one number. The only directly measured point at a NEET-like horizon comes from an experiment with a 168-day retention interval, where a 28-day gap produced the best recall at 56% correct, against 33% for a one-day gap and 43% for an 84-day gap.
Is spaced repetition better for NEET Biology than for Physics?
Almost certainly, and the reason is what the research actually studied. The main meta-analysis covers verbal recall tasks, which NCERT Biology terminology closely resembles and multi-step Physics numericals do not. Biology is 360 of the 720 marks, so the best-covered half of the paper is also the largest.
Does spaced repetition actually work, or is it just study-tips advice?
It works and it is among the better-evidenced findings in learning research. Cepeda and colleagues pooled 254 studies and 14,811 participants in 2006 and found spaced study produced 47.3% correct against 36.7% for massed study. The uncertainty is about which exact intervals are best, not about whether spacing helps.
Can I revise a chapter too late for it to help?
Yes, and this is the part most advice misses. In the 168-day experiment, recall rose from 33% at a one-day gap to 56% at 28 days and then fell back to 43% at 84 days. Leaving a chapter untouched for three months cost about as much as revising it the next day, so longer is not automatically better.
How many times should I revise the NEET syllabus before the exam?
A gap of roughly a sixth of your remaining horizon works out to about five or six passes per chapter whatever your starting point, which is a reasonable sanity check on a plan. Two passes in a year is under-spaced against this evidence; fifteen is more than a two-year NCERT syllabus across three subjects has room for.
Should my revision gaps get longer each time?
It is a defensible workload choice but not an evidence-backed one. Cepeda et al. compared expanding against fixed intervals across 18 studies and 1,518 participants and found 62.0% versus 58.6%, not significant at p = .61. Expanding schedules spend less time on secured chapters, which is an argument about your calendar rather than your memory.
What is the best revision gap in the last month before NEET?
Much shorter than earlier in the year, because the optimum tracks the horizon. At a 10-day retention interval a one-day gap outperformed every longer gap in the same set of experiments, reversing the pattern seen at 168 days. In the final fortnight, gaps of a day or two are the direction the evidence points.
Does NEET give a second attempt in the same year like JEE Main?
No. NEET UG has been conducted as a single annual sitting, unlike JEE Main, which runs two sessions with the better percentile counting. That removes the option of treating one attempt as a rehearsal, which is why a NEET revision plan has to peak on one date. Confirm the schedule for your own cycle against the NTA bulletin.
How does the 45/45/90 split change my revision plan?
It says Biology should get the largest and most frequent revision cycles, because it is 360 of 720 marks and the material most responsive to spaced recall. Physics carries 180 marks but needs problem-solving practice rather than recall passes, so equal time across three subjects underweights half the paper.
Are flashcards enough for NEET revision?
For Biology terminology and Inorganic Chemistry, they map well onto what the spacing research tested. For Physics numericals and Physical Chemistry calculation, they do not: nothing in that literature resembles executing a multi-step procedure under time pressure, and treating those chapters as recall material is the common way to misapply the evidence.
How strong is the research behind long revision gaps specifically?
Weaker than the headline suggests, and worth knowing before anyone quotes a schedule as settled. In the 2006 meta-analysis, retention intervals of 30 days or more with study gaps of 2 to 28 days rested on four studies and 175 participants, and gaps beyond 29 days on three studies and 84 participants.
Should I revise a chapter right after finishing it?
A quick consolidation pass is reasonable, but treat it as part of learning the chapter rather than as a revision round. Against a horizon of months, a one-day gap was the worst-performing condition tested; the pass that actually buys retention is the one scheduled weeks later.
