XAT is 95 questions across two timed parts - 170 minutes for Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making and Quant & DI together, then a separate 10-minute General Knowledge block that does not count toward your percentile. Decision Making is the section no other major MBA exam has, and it does not reward the same preparation as Quant. Tracking it as its own subject is the only way to see whether it is actually improving.

Decision Making: no formula, no other exam like it
CAT, GMAT and SNAP all test Quant, Verbal and some form of reasoning - none has a section built from business caselets and ethical dilemmas the way XAT's Decision Making is. It rewards careful reading of stated constraints and consistent judgment, not memorized technique, which makes it the hardest of XAT's sections to prepare for in a conventional sense.
Two penalty systems in one paper, not one
A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. Separately, skipping too many questions costs you too: the first 8 unattempted questions across all of Part 1 are free, but every skip after that costs 0.10 marks - even without a single wrong answer. That is a rule most CAT-style exams simply do not have, and it changes the arithmetic of when caution is actually free.
The break-even point is worth knowing precisely: XAT MCQs carry five options, and the -0.25 penalty is set at exactly 1/(n-1) for n=5, which means a genuinely blind guess nets exactly zero expected value - identical to a free skip, and strictly better than the -0.10 cost of a skip once your free allowance is used up.
General Knowledge decides nothing about your shortlist, until it decides everything
GK is not included in the percentile that gets you shortlisted - only Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making and Quant & DI are. But GK scores are reported separately and used later, at the GD-PI/final-selection stage, so a candidate who ignores it entirely because "it doesn't count toward percentile" is postponing, not avoiding, the cost of a weak GK score.

- A roughly 21-question section unique to XAT that presents business caselets and ethical-dilemma scenarios, testing judgment rather than calculation or grammar. No other major MBA entrance exam has an equivalent section.
- What is XAT's negative marking?
- -0.25 for each wrong answer in Part 1 (Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quant & DI). General Knowledge has no negative marking at all.
- Is there a penalty for skipping questions on XAT?
- Yes - a rule most exams do not have. The first 8 unattempted questions across all of Part 1 are penalty-free, but every skip beyond that costs 0.10 marks, separately from the wrong-answer penalty.
- Does General Knowledge count toward my XAT percentile?
- No - the percentile is calculated only from Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making and Quant & DI. GK is reported separately and used at the interview/GD-PI stage.
- How long is the XAT exam?

- Does it work for exams other than XAT?
- Yes. Nothing is hardcoded to one exam - your subjects define it. Presets exist for CAT, JEE, NEET, GATE, GRE, GMAT, UPSC, NMAT, BANK PO and IELTS, and any other exam can be typed in.
