One test, two independently adaptive halves
The GRE is not adaptive question by question. It adapts exactly twice: your accuracy on the first Verbal section decides whether the second Verbal section is drawn from a harder or easier pool, and the same happens separately for Quant. Every candidate who sees a given section sees a fixed set of questions inside it - nothing shifts mid-section.
The practical effect is that your first-section accuracy in each measure matters more than any single question within it, because it sets the difficulty ceiling available to you in the second section. A study log that only shows one blended score per mock hides exactly the number this mechanic depends on.
No penalty for a wrong answer, on any question, anywhere
ETS built the GRE so that leaving a question blank and answering it wrong score identically - nothing. That means any guess with a real chance of being right has a positive expected value, and there is never a mathematical reason to skip a question rather than attempt it.
This is a different instinct from an exam with negative marking, where holding back on an uncertain answer can be the correct call. On the GRE the correct call is close to the opposite: attempt everything, and if time runs short, a fast guess beats an unanswered question every time.
A five-year score that outlives one application cycle
A GRE score stays valid for five years from the test date, and the retake rule allows sitting again every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12-month period. That is a longer horizon than most single-application-season exams, and it is common for a candidate to have two or three attempts on record across different points in their preparation.
A study log that survives across multiple attempts - not just the run-up to one sitting - is more useful here than on an exam taken once and never revisited.
Accepted well beyond STEM
The GRE is the standard admissions test for MS and PhD programs across STEM, economics, social sciences and the humanities, and it is also accepted by more than 1,300 MBA programs worldwide as an alternative to the GMAT. A candidate weighing GRE against GMAT for a business degree is choosing between two very differently structured tests - the GRE has no negative marking and a coarser two-branch adaptivity, against the GMAT Focus Edition's fully question-level adaptive design.
