Growth Mindset and NEET Prep: What 365,915 Students Show

A meta-analysis of 273 studies and over 365,000 students found the relationship between growth mindset and academic achievement was weak overall. A second meta-analysis of 43 mindset interventions found the same. NEET prep culture treats "believe ability is not fixed" as a near-universal performance lever. The largest study on the question found something much smaller, concentrated in one specific group.

The largest test of the growth mindset theory to date found the overall relationship between mindset and academic achievement was weak - and that mindset interventions produced a clearer benefit for one specific group, not for students generally. Sisk, Burgoyne, Sun, Butler and Macnamara (2018, Psychological Science, 29(4), 549-571) ran two meta-analyses: one pooling 273 studies and 365,915 students on the correlation between mindset and achievement, and a second pooling 43 intervention studies and 57,155 students on whether teaching students a growth mindset actually raises their scores. Their own summary states plainly: "Overall effects were weak for both meta-analyses." NEET prep culture - years-long, high-attrition, saturated with "believe ability can grow" messaging from coaching institutes and motivational content - treats this idea as close to a universal lever. The best current evidence says something narrower.

What the theory claims, and what this actually tested

Growth mindset theory (Carol Dweck's framework) holds that students who believe abilities like intelligence are malleable with effort ("growth mindset") tend to do better academically than students who believe ability is fixed. The one place the paper's own abstract says the theory held up better than the average: "some results supported specific tenets of the theory, namely, that students with low socioeconomic status or who are academically at risk might benefit from mind-set interventions." That is a meaningfully different claim than "growth mindset improves outcomes for students" - it is "growth mindset interventions show a clearer benefit in specific at-risk and low-SES populations," which is a much narrower group than the general NEET aspirant population this framing usually gets applied to.
