Why "Start Early" Isn't a Plan
Every NEET aspirant is told to start early, and almost none of them are told what to actually do with that time beyond "cover the syllabus." A study plan with no phase structure produces the same failure mode whether you start in Class 11 or six months before the exam: you keep re-reading chapters you already understand while genuinely weak topics never get a second pass. The plan below has three phases with different goals, and the mistake to avoid is treating all of it as one long "study everything" phase.
Phase 1: Concept Building (Class 11 through mid-Class 12)
This phase is entirely NCERT-first. NEET is set almost exclusively from the NCERT syllabus, and Biology in particular rewards near-verbatim familiarity with NCERT's phrasing - a level of textbook fidelity JEE aspirants rarely need for their own Physics and Chemistry. Resist jumping into heavy question-bank practice before the underlying concept is genuinely settled - solving problems on a shaky foundation teaches you to pattern-match instead of understand, and that breaks down the moment a question's phrasing changes.
Keep a running list of topics you found genuinely difficult on first pass. This list becomes the backbone of your revision priority in Phase 3 - don't rely on memory to reconstruct it eight months later.
Phase 2: Question-Bank Practice (Second half of Class 12)
Once a topic's concept is settled, move to subject-wise question-bank practice for that topic rather than waiting for the whole syllabus to be "done." This is where conceptual understanding turns into exam-ready speed, and where you first encounter NEET's actual question-framing quirks: near-identical NCERT statements with one changed word, numericals that look like a formula plug-in but hide a unit-conversion trap. Do this subject-wise and chapter-wise for now - mixed practice is a Phase 3 tool.
This is also the phase to start sectional tests (single-subject, timed) rather than jumping straight to full mocks. A sectional test isolates whether a weakness is conceptual or purely about speed and pressure, which a full mock's one aggregate score won't tell you.
Phase 3: Mock-Heavy Final Phase (Last 3-4 months)
This is where full-length, 180-minute mocks under real exam conditions become the primary activity, not an occasional add-on. The goal shifts from "do I know this" to "can I execute this under the paper's actual constraints" - timing, negative-marking decisions, fatigue in the final section. Review every mock properly using the four-tag method in our mock analysis guide, and check whether an error pattern repeats across mocks or was one bad day. A common mistake here is taking mocks without reviewing them properly, or reviewing once and never checking whether the same mistake resurfaces three mocks later. One mock's data is noise; five mocks' worth of the same weak topic is signal.
The Arithmetic Behind a 40/30/30 Split
Because Biology carries 90 of NEET's 180 questions against 45 each for Physics and Chemistry (see our full pattern breakdown), a common default is roughly 40% Biology, 30% Chemistry, 30% Physics. It's worth running that split against your own actual numbers rather than trusting the percentages in the abstract. Say you have 18 months left and can genuinely commit 4 focused hours a day: that's 4 × 30 × 18 ≈ 2,160 hours total. A 40/30/30 split turns that into roughly 864 hours for Biology, 648 for Chemistry, 648 for Physics over the full runway - which, spread across 18 months, is about 48 Biology-hours a month against 36 each for Chemistry and Physics. Run the same arithmetic on your own available hours and months; if the monthly Physics number comes out under ten or fifteen hours, that's a concrete early warning that the subject will compound into a real weakness long before a mock tells you so.

Why Consistency Beats Cramming
A plan only works if you can tell, weeks later, whether you actually followed it. Sporadic 6-hour cramming days alternating with days of no study produce worse retention than the same total hours spread evenly, because spaced exposure is what actually consolidates memory - doubly true for NCERT-heavy Biology, where forgetting curves are steep without regular revisits. Logging daily study time by subject is the only reliable way to catch a slow drift - Physics quietly slipping from 36 planned monthly hours to 10 actual ones - before it shows up as a bad mock score three months later.
