JEE In-Exam Time Management: A Section-Wise Strategy

Ninety questions, three hours, three subjects. A concrete checkpoint schedule for spending JEE Main time where it earns marks, plus the actual arithmetic behind why the sunk-cost trap costs so much.

The Constraint You're Actually Solving For

JEE Main Paper 1 gives three hours to attempt 90 questions across Physics, Chemistry and Maths. That averages to two minutes per question, but averages mislead here - some questions take 30 seconds, some legitimately need five minutes, and the exam doesn't announce which is which in advance. In-exam time management is a distinct, trainable skill separate from content knowledge: a student who can solve every question given unlimited time can still walk out with a mediocre score by spending eight minutes on one stubborn numerical and leaving three easy questions at the end unattempted.

A Concrete Checkpoint Schedule

Split the 180 minutes into three 50-minute blocks (one per subject, 150 minutes) plus a 30-minute buffer at the end for everything marked for return. Fifty minutes for 25 questions is exactly two minutes per question on average, but the block should be run against internal checkpoints, not watched as one undifferentiated stretch:

The rule that makes this work is the one in the last row: the 50-minute block ends on the clock, not on completion. A student who runs Physics 15 minutes over "because I was almost done" has already spent a third of the buffer before reaching Chemistry, and the buffer is what the marked-for-return questions across all three subjects depend on.

Laid out against the actual exam clock rather than three separate 50-minute stopwatches, the same schedule looks like this:

Running the buffer as one combined 30-minute pool at the end, rather than three separate 10-minute pools per subject, matters because the marked questions won't distribute evenly - a mock where Physics produced eight marked questions and Chemistry produced two needs the buffer weighted toward Physics, which a per-subject buffer can't do. If the checkpoints above are consistently being cleared early in a subject, resist the urge to simply move faster through the rest - instead spend the surplus time inside that block working through its own marked questions immediately, since a subject that's naturally fast is exactly where clearing marked questions has the best odds.

A Triage Framework for Every Question

Within each block, the core skill is deciding, within the first 15-20 seconds of reading a question, which bucket it goes into:

  • Attempt now - the type is recognised immediately and the method is known. Solve it and move on without second-guessing.
  • Mark and return - the method is known but it will take real time (a long calculation, a multi-step numerical), or confidence is shaky. Note it and come back only after clearing the rest of the block.
  • Skip for now - unfamiliar, or drawing a blank. Since MCQs carry negative marking, a blind guess is a bad trade unless at least two options can be eliminated; numerical-value questions have historically been scored differently, so check the current year's marking scheme before deciding a guess policy for those specifically.

The point of this triage is guaranteeing every attemptable question in a subject gets seen before serious time is committed to any single hard one. Running out of time with easy marks unclaimed because of getting stuck early is the single most common and most avoidable way to lose score.

The Sunk-Cost Trap, With the Actual Arithmetic

Here's why the instinct to "finish what you started" is expensive rather than merely inefficient. A numerical question at the 90-second mark with the answer still not converging has two paths: push through for another 3-4 minutes hoping it resolves, or mark it and move on. At two minutes per question on average, those 3-4 minutes are worth 1.5-2 other questions elsewhere in the block - questions with a much higher chance of being right, since they haven't already resisted 90 seconds of a known method. The 90 seconds already spent are gone either way; the only question that matters is what the next 90 seconds are worth spent elsewhere, and the answer is almost always "more than finishing this one."

Order Matters, Even Within a Subject

Within each block, don't necessarily solve in question order. A quick first scan to spot the questions answerable in under a minute, solved first, banks marks and calms nerves before engaging the harder ones. This matters especially in Chemistry, where factual Inorganic questions are often much faster than a Physical Chemistry numerical, even though they're mixed together on the paper - a student solving strictly in order can burn five minutes on question 3 (a Physical numerical) while question 7 (an Inorganic recall question worth the same one mark) sits unattempted for no reason.

The scan itself should take under a minute for 25 questions - it's a read for recognisable question type, not a read for the answer. In practice this means the first minute of a block is spent reading, not solving, which feels counterintuitive when the clock is already running, but a minute spent identifying four or five instantly-answerable questions upfront is a minute that pays for itself the first time it prevents a hard question from eating time that belonged to an easy one later in the block.

This Has to Be Rehearsed, Not Just Read

None of this works as a strategy read once and applied cold on exam day. Triage speed, checkpoint discipline and resisting the sunk-cost pull are habits that only form under actual time pressure, which means practicing them in full-length, strictly timed sectional and full mocks - not untimed practice sets where there's no incentive to move on. Treat every mock as a rehearsal of this exact schedule, and use the post-mock analysis to specifically check whether easy marks were left unattempted or a question that beat you anyway ate the buffer.
