Two Sessions, One Best Score
JEE Main is conducted by the NTA as a computer-based test, run across two sessions - one in January and one in April. Appearing for both is allowed, and whichever session gives the better percentile is the one that counts toward admissions. This isn't a minor scheduling detail - it changes how the last few months of prep should be planned. A candidate who treats January as a dry run and April as the real attempt is playing it very differently from one who goes all-in on January and treats April as a backup only if needed.
Both sessions use the same syllabus and a broadly similar difficulty band, so there's no strategic advantage in holding content back for one over the other. The value of two sessions is purely two independent shots at a good day.
Paper 1 Structure (B.E./B.Tech)
Paper 1 covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In recent years the paper has settled at 75 questions total - 25 per subject, all compulsory - for 300 marks, in a 3-hour window. A correct answer earns +4 and a wrong one costs -1. Each subject's block mixes multiple-choice questions with numerical-value questions, where the answer is typed in rather than chosen from options.
- MCQs carry negative marking for a wrong answer, so a blind guess has a real cost.
- Numerical-value questions have historically not carried negative marking in Main, which changes the calculus on attempting a question that's only partially certain.
- Per-subject blocks arrive self-contained rather than interleaved, so subject order within the paper is a free choice.
Always confirm the exact question count and marking scheme against the official NTA information bulletin for the specific attempt year - these details are finalised close to the exam and can shift cycle to cycle.
Paper 1 vs the Architecture and Planning Papers
Everything above describes Paper 1, for B.E./B.Tech. JEE Main also runs a separate Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning), each with a different question mix - Paper 2A adds a drawing test alongside Maths and Aptitude, and Paper 2B replaces drawing with Planning-specific questions. Syllabus by Subject
The syllabus spans Class 11 and 12 NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, though "NCERT" undersells how deep some topics go once JEE-specific problem styles are factored in.
Physics
Mechanics (kinematics, laws of motion, work-energy-power, rotational motion, gravitation), Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory, Electrodynamics (electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction), Optics, and Modern Physics. Chemistry
Split into three roughly equal-weight branches - Physical, Organic and Inorganic - each rewarding a different kind of studying. Physical is calculation-heavy, Organic is mechanism-heavy, Inorganic is largely memorisation anchored to NCERT. Mathematics
Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus (differentiation, integration, differential equations), Trigonometry, Vectors and 3D Geometry, and Probability/Statistics. How Normalization Actually Works
Because JEE Main runs across multiple sessions and multiple shifts within a session, raw scores from a harder shift aren't directly comparable to raw scores from an easier one, so NTA publishes results as a percentile rather than a raw score out of 300. The published formula is: percentile = 100 × (number of candidates in that shift with a raw score equal to or lower than yours) ÷ (total number of candidates in that shift). Note what it depends on - your rank inside your own shift - and what it doesn't: your raw score in isolation.
Here's an illustration of why that matters, using two hypothetical shifts rather than real reported figures. Say two candidates each score 220/300 raw. In Shift A, the paper ran on the easier side and a large share of the shift also scored above 200, so plenty of people beat or matched 220 - that raw score might land around the 96th percentile there. In Shift B, the paper ran harder and far fewer candidates cleared 200 at all, so the same 220 clears more of the field and might land around the 98th percentile. Same raw score, same subject mix, two percentiles - purely a function of who else sat that shift.
This is why obsessing over a single mock's raw score is less useful than tracking percentile-equivalent performance across many mocks. Raw score swings a lot shift to shift and test to test; relative standing is the more stable signal.
What a Main Score Actually Admits You To
JEE Main's percentile feeds directly into JoSAA counselling, the single centralised process that allocates seats at the NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and GFTIs (Government-Funded Technical Institutes) - a genuine engineering education outcome on its own, independent of whether Advanced ever gets attempted. Treating Main as a "qualifier" that only matters for unlocking Advanced undersells it - for most candidates, Main's own result is the admissions outcome.
Common Misconceptions Worth Correcting
- "Only the second attempt matters" - both attempts are genuine opportunities; the better percentile counts, but a weak January attempt still gives real diagnostic data before April.
- "Numerical questions are free marks" - the lack of negative marking on Main's numerical-value questions makes them lower-risk, not lower-effort; a badly executed calculation still scores zero.
- "The syllabus changes every year" - the core Class 11/12 syllabus has been broadly stable across recent cycles; always check the current year's official syllabus PDF rather than relying on last year's, but don't expect wholesale changes.
