NCERT First, Always
Before any reference book, NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Maths (Class 11 and 12) has to be genuinely mastered, not skimmed once and set aside. Inorganic Chemistry in particular draws heavily on NCERT's exact phrasing - a question can hinge on a sentence you read past because it looked "too basic" the first time. If you had to prepare with only one resource, NCERT would still get you further than any single reference book below. Everything here supplements NCERT; none of it replaces it.
One official resource sits between the NCERT textbook and outside reference books and is worth naming separately: NCERT Exemplar (Physics, Chemistry, Maths), published by NCERT itself as a harder problem set on the exact same syllabus, with no new topics to learn. It's the natural first step up once the textbook exercises feel comfortable, before reaching for HC Verma, OP Tandon or anything published outside NCERT.
Physics: HC Verma, then DC Pandey, then Irodov only if you need it
- NCERT Physics (11 and 12): the conceptual base. JEE Main tests this level of direct understanding more often than the "too easy" label suggests.
- Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma (Volumes 1 and 2): the standard bridge from NCERT to JEE-level problem-solving, especially in Mechanics and Electricity/Magnetism. Its problems are a real step up without being a different kind of exam.
- Understanding Physics by DC Pandey (Arihant): more solved examples per chapter than Verma, organised closer to how JEE Main actually asks questions - a reasonable second pass if you want more volume in the same difficulty band, not a replacement for Verma.
- Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov: the book everyone has heard of and most people buy too early. Irodov's problems are genuinely Advanced-and-beyond difficulty, several notches past what Main asks and past a meaningful share of Advanced too. Open it only after Main-level speed and accuracy are solid - working through Irodov while still slow on straightforward mechanics problems burns hours on the wrong difficulty tier.
Beyond these, previous years' JEE Main and Advanced papers are a better use of a "third resource" slot than a third textbook - real exam questions show you the actual style no reference book can substitute for. Chemistry: split by branch, not by book
- NCERT Chemistry (11 and 12): non-negotiable for Inorganic specifically - JEE Main Inorganic questions track NCERT phrasing closely enough that re-reading it carefully in the final weeks is high-value revision, not a cop-out.
- Physical Chemistry for Competitive Examinations by O.P. Tandon: the standard numerical-practice reference for Physical Chemistry - Mole Concept, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Chemical Equilibrium - where the skill is solving problems, not reading theory.
- Organic Chemistry (Problems in Organic Chemistry) by M.S. Chauhan: a large, mechanism-organised problem set that pairs with the reaction-classification approach in our Chemistry strategy guide.
- Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J.D. Lee: Advanced-only, and even then optional. It goes well past what Main needs and past most of what Advanced needs too. Most students get more marks per hour from a fourth read of NCERT Inorganic than a first read of Lee.
Maths: NCERT plus one problem-volume book, not four
- NCERT Mathematics (11 and 12): its exercises are more useful for JEE Main than they get credit for, especially in Calculus and Coordinate Geometry.
- RD Sharma: a solid step up in problem volume per topic once NCERT is finished, without jumping straight to Advanced-tier difficulty.
- The Cengage Maths series by G. Tewani (Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry - one book per topic): the standard next step for Advanced-level depth, and dense enough that finishing even two of the four volumes properly is a real achievement. Pick the volume matching your weakest topic first rather than buying the set.
- SL Loney's Coordinate Geometry and Plane Trigonometry: a 19th-century text still assigned because its problems train exactly the multi-step algebraic manipulation Advanced rewards. Genuinely worth it only once Tewani-level problems feel comfortable - it is not a starting point for anyone.
Maths rewards raw problem-solving repetition more than the other two subjects, which is also why our Maths shortcuts guide insists a technique only counts once it fires in under five seconds without you weighing whether it applies - book problems are where that speed actually gets built.
The Book-Hoarding Trap, Specifically
The failure pattern is recognisable and specific: a student owns Irodov, all four Cengage volumes, and both MS Chauhan and JD Lee, and has meaningfully finished none of them. Every one of those books is individually good. Owning all of them at once is not "more coverage" - it's more decision fatigue about which book to open tonight, and more half-finished problem sets on the same topic across three different sources. A student with one reference per subject, worked cover to cover, plus 8-10 years of previous papers solved and reviewed, will consistently outperform that shelf.

The Solutions-Manual Trap
Every book on this list ships with (or has freely available) worked solutions, and how those get used matters as much as which book gets bought. Checking a solution after a genuine, timed attempt - 10-15 minutes of real effort on a problem before looking - builds the pattern-recognition these books exist to teach. Reading the solution after a 30-second glance at the problem builds nothing except a false sense of having "covered" the chapter, because recognising a worked solution as correct and generating that solution yourself under exam pressure are different skills entirely. If a chapter's problem set gets finished suspiciously fast, that's usually this trap, not genuine mastery.
How to Actually Use These Books
Pick one book per subject beyond NCERT, and work through it chapter-aligned with your syllabus progress from the study plan rather than as a separate track. A chapter isn't done because you read the theory - it's done when you've solved enough of its problems to name your own recurring mistake in it. Reach for Irodov, Cengage, or Lee only once the standard-tier book for that subject is genuinely finished, not in parallel with it.
