IBPS PO and SBI PO look almost identical on the surface - three prelims sections, four mains sections plus a descriptive test, -0.25 negative marking throughout. Prepare for one using material written for the other, though, and a candidate can walk in with the wrong instincts on at least two structural points that genuinely change how each exam should be approached.
Prelims: same subjects, different safety net
Both exams give 100 questions for 100 marks across English, Quantitative/Numerical Aptitude and Reasoning Ability, inside a strict 60-minute window split into three fixed 20-minute sections with no time transfer between them. Where they differ: IBPS PO applies a sectional cutoff at Prelims - you must clear a minimum score in each of the three sections individually, not just overall. SBI PO does not; only the overall Prelims score matters there.
This is a real preparation difference, not a footnote. A candidate strong in Quant and weak in English can, on SBI PO, compensate for a shaky English section with an overall score that still clears - and can genuinely afford to under-invest in English relative to their stronger sections. The same candidate attempting IBPS PO cannot use that strategy: a below-cutoff English score disqualifies them regardless of how well Quant and Reasoning went. IBPS PO prep has to guarantee a floor in every section; SBI PO prep can lean into strengths more aggressively at Prelims.
Mains: SBI PO runs longer, both add two new sections
Both exams expand from three Prelims sections to four at Mains, adding Data Analysis & Interpretation and General/Economy/Banking Awareness on top of a computer-aptitude-enhanced Reasoning section and English. IBPS PO's Mains objective portion runs 160 minutes (170 questions, 200 marks) plus a 30-minute descriptive test - 190 minutes total. SBI PO's runs longer: 180 minutes objective plus 30 minutes descriptive, 210 minutes total, for the same 170-question, 200-mark objective structure. The extra 20 minutes on SBI PO's Mains is distributed across its own section-time splits, not a flat bonus - each section still has its own fixed clock.
Final selection: the stage IBPS PO simply does not have
This is the largest structural difference of the two exams. IBPS PO's final merit is Mains (80%) plus Interview (20%) - two stages after Prelims. SBI PO adds a third: a Group Exercise worth 20 marks, combined with the Interview (30 marks) into a single 50-mark final stage, weighted at 25% against Mains' 75%. IBPS PO currently has no Group Exercise component at all.
A Group Exercise - a group discussion or case-based group task assessed on collaborative and communication skills - requires a genuinely different kind of preparation than a one-on-one interview does, and it is not something an IBPS PO candidate needs to think about at all. Someone preparing for both exams in parallel needs to budget separate preparation time for this stage specifically for SBI PO.
Eligibility: a one-year gap that is easy to miss
IBPS PO's minimum age is 20 years as on 1 July of the exam year; SBI PO's is 21 years as on 1 April. A 20-year-old graduate is eligible for IBPS PO but not yet eligible for SBI PO - a genuine, not cosmetic, difference for younger candidates timing their first attempt.

What stays the same
Negative marking is identical - a flat -0.25 per wrong objective answer, on both Prelims and Mains, on both exams, with no penalty for unattempted questions. Both also use an equipercentile normalization method to make scores comparable across different exam shifts, since both are held over multiple sessions with naturally varying question difficulty.
Where this is uncertain
- The exact question-to-marks ratio in IBPS PO Prelims (Quant: 35 questions for 30 marks; Reasoning: 35 questions for 40 marks - not a flat 1-mark-per-question structure) is corroborated across three independent aggregator sources describing the "revised 2026 pattern," but could not be independently confirmed against the raw ibps.in notification PDF in this research pass.
- SBI PO's descriptive-test sub-task breakdown (whether it is still Letter + Essay, or has moved to Email + Situation Analysis + Report Writing) is genuinely disputed across sources - this post deliberately does not itemize it for that reason.
