Best CAT Preparation Books: The 3 of 6 I Finished

I own six CAT prep books. I logged real hours against three of them and the other three sat closed after week two. Here is which ones earned their shelf space, checked against my own subject-tagged session log.

The Question a "Best Books" List Can't Actually Answer

Every CAT books list, including ones I wrote earlier drafts of, ranks books the same way: by reputation. Arun Sharma is the standard, Nishit Sinha is the standard, and so on. What none of them tell you is whether the person recommending the book actually finished it - and I only know the answer for my own shelf because I log every study session against a subject and a topic in Karma Yogi, which means I can go back and see exactly how many hours I put against each book by name, not by memory.

Six books, three months, one honest audit. Three of them earned real hours. Three sat closed after the second week and I kept telling myself I'd "get back to them."

Quantitative Aptitude

What I actually used: NCERT Class 9 & 10 Mathematics

I hadn't opened a geometry textbook since school, and the first two weeks of my Quant sessions were logged straight against NCERT chapters - circles, triangles, mensuration - because I needed the theorems back before any "shortcut" book would have made sense. This is the one book on the list I'd tell anyone to start with regardless of background, and it's also the shortest-lived: once the fundamentals were back, I stopped opening it entirely by week three.

What I actually used: Arun Sharma's Quant book

This is the one book that stayed in rotation the longest - close to six weeks of logged sessions, tagged by topic (Number System, Algebra, Geometry, Modern Math) rather than just "Quant." The LOD 1/2/3 structure is genuinely useful for one specific reason: it stopped me from doing what I did in week one, which was attempt LOD 3 permutations problems before I could reliably do LOD 1 percentages fast. Work LOD 1-2 to the point of boredom before touching LOD 3 - that's not a platitude, it's the actual order that made my early SIMCAT Quant scores climb (my Quant went from 21 in mid-May to 35 by early August, tracked mock over mock in my full mock log).

Where it stopped being worth opening

Book problems are untimed by design, and CAT is not. My topic tags show the exact week I stopped logging sessions against Arun Sharma and started logging them against "SIMCAT review" instead - roughly the point where I could solve the LOD 2 problems correctly but too slowly to matter. No further chapters fixed that; only timed sectional practice did.

VARC - Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

What I actually used: a daily reading habit, not a book

I track a subject called NEWSPAPER in my own account, separate from VARC, specifically because reading long-form prose daily turned out to matter more than any RC book I bought. I do own Nishit Sinha's Pearson guide, and I read maybe a third of it - the question-type taxonomy chapter was useful once (it's close to what I later wrote up properly in my six RC question types post), but the practice passages in the book read nothing like an actual CAT-style passage. My VARC scores across 15 mocks swung between 3 and 39 - noise a static book can't train you out of, because the variable isn't technique, it's whether you read carefully that specific day.

Verbal Ability sets

Para-jumbles and odd-sentence-out I drilled from loose practice-set PDFs, not a bound book - these question types are pattern-recognition built from volume, and a dedicated book chapter on "how to solve para-jumbles" added less than the next fifty questions did.

DILR - Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning

This is the section where a book helped least, and my own numbers say so bluntly: three months of deliberate practice moved my average DILR score from 18.4 to 20.6 - two marks. I did work through parts of Arun Sharma & Meenakshi Upadhyay's DI and LR books early on for the foundational set types (arrangements, blood relations, basic caselets), and that part was worth doing once. But DILR sets on real papers since roughly 2015 are hybrid, multi-constraint puzzles that don't map to a book's table of contents, and no amount of additional book chapters was going to fix what turned out to be a triage problem, not a knowledge problem - see the DILR meltdown in my mock log for exactly what that looked like on a bad day. Past real papers taught me more per hour than the book did after the first two weeks.

The Book That Quietly Mattered Most: Past Papers, Not a Book at All

If I could keep exactly one resource, it wouldn't be a book. It would be the last five years of actual CAT papers. They're the only material that reflects real difficulty calibration and the real MCQ/Non-MCQ mix, and once I had real papers to work from (the CAT 2020 slots in my mock log are exactly this), the gap between "book confidence" and "paper performance" became visible fast - my CAT 2020 Slot 1 attempt scored 94, close to my best mock, and it's a real paper, not a coaching simulation.

What I'd Tell Someone Starting Today

Buy three books, not six: NCERT 9-10 for Quant foundations if yours are rusty, Arun Sharma's Quant book for LOD-calibrated practice, and skip a dedicated RC book in favor of a daily reading habit plus real past papers. That's roughly half of most published lists, and it's closer to what actually earned logged hours on my own account than the full six ever did.

How I Know Which Books I Actually Used

None of the above is memory - it's read off my own session log, tagged by subject and topic rather than a vague "studied today." That distinction is the entire point: "I read Arun Sharma today" tells you nothing three weeks later, but a topic tag against a logged session tells you exactly how many hours went where, and when you quietly stopped.
